Handmade for the Holidays: 3 Local Ohio Crafters   1 comment

‘Tis time to decorate for the holiday season!  Let’s pull out those trinkets from yesteryear & add a few new pieces of merriment while we’re at it.  Here are a few Ohio crafters-extraordinaire hoping to spread some cheer.

#1  Stoneware clay ornaments by Mariola Pottery of Wooster, Ohio would be the perfect final touch to any gift.  Better yet, as a random act of kindness, loop one over a nice bottle of wine and leave it for an unsuspecting co-worker!  Choose from sweet birds, little lambs, & lace stamped polar bears.

#2  Rachel Novak of Lewis Center, Ohio just opened her Etsy shop, Rachel Party Decor, this spring.  If you appreciate the rustic look of burlap and buntings, you’ll be right at home.  She also designs party decor for weddings & baby showers, which in my opinion make the sweetest keepsakes for those memorable days!

#3 Anne Drake of Finley, Ohio designs endearing baubles & adorable holiday pillows at Sutton Place Designs.  I’m swooning over the simplicity of her grain sack heart ornaments.  They are the perfect balance between rustic and countryside in my book!

So simmer some hot apple cider, hop on the inter-web and pick up something “remarkable” for your home this season…something made with hearthand.

Handmade From the Heart of It All   Leave a comment

I was drifting through Etsy today and decided to see what homespun wonders were available from the creative folk in my home state of Ohio.  Here are 3 homegrown goodies from my neck of the woods.

Gardenmis Sachet

Priscilla of Cincinatti, Ohio hand creates fragrant delights from herbs such as lavender and balsam for the home.  I’m swooning over her scented holiday ornaments too at Gardenmis!

Diane Ackers acrylic works on wood canvas are completely charming and ever so sweet!  I’m a sucker for canines and this li’l french bulldog entitled “Lily Bug”  would be perfect in my home office.  (Did you hear that Santa?)

Namaste Mug

Antonia of”Second Chance Ceramics” in Bellevue, Ohio breathes the (re)markable into retired restaurant mugs with handmade art.  Sip your morning tea and reveal the serene sloth perched just inside.  How adorable!

You know …holiday shopping has begun!  Instead of rushing to buy those mass produced commonalities, look to the plethora of handmade gifts available from your local artists, craftfolk, and (re)markables on Etsy!

Local “Re”-Markable Designers Here in L’il Ol’ Ohio   4 comments

Hello from the Midwest dear readers!  I wanted to share a few  designers from my neck of the woods today.  The image below was created by Laurie Shafer.  She assembles her accent pieces (like this table) from Harley parts…thusly named “Part Art”.  I know a few Steam-punk fanatics & Harley gear-heads that would totally dig her stuff.

Local upcycled table

Next we have lighting by Jeffrey Wright in Minerva, Ohio.  I fell in love with this first light at a little art co-op shop in Hartville, Ohio, but you can visit his shop UpWright Concepts virtually at Etsy.

UpWright Concepts is a custom design studio specializing in upcycled or repurposed lighting and home decor.  I had to include just one more of his custom lights (above).  Ok…on to the next!

The re-purposed mail sorter (below) was lovingly upcycled by Rebecca Dunn of Massillon, Oh.  You can peruse her salvaged treasures at Rust and Found in Canal Fulton, Oh or virtually at her Etsy shop.  The official website for her store includes a nice little blog updating you on their hunting & picking adventures.  Fun stuff!

Local cubby

Last but not least is Lori Compton of Hartville, Ohio and her shop, One Vintage Lane.  If you like your salvage & rust sprinkled with a bit more French-flavored chic, you need to take a road trip to her boutique.  (added bonus: just across the parking lot are several other consignment/resale stores like Twice Is Nice Consignments, Best Bib & Tucker, Goodwill, & a Mennonite owned non-profit resale shop named Hartville Thrift Shoppe.)

Local one vintage lane

Lori excels at merchandising her wares and she is always changing things up in order to maintain a fresh shopping experience.  You will smack your forehead at least once & say, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

I’m feeling pretty darn lucky to have all of these talented designers so close to home.  I’d love to hear about the designers, crafty-folk, and salvage geeks in your area, so don’t be shy!  I may get to visit your neck of the woods someday!  Have a “Re”-markable Weekend!
